Patrick Neal
A Studio Visit With Scott Schnepf
From Tether 3, page 56
Schnepf’s work proceeds from visual impulses rather than narrative ideas and he collects these doodads for inspiration. Finding objects in junk shops, nearby at arm’s length, or maybe offered by friends, he will selectively gather a chosen few into still-life configurations. Early in our visit, he pointed to an image of a little vase explaining how the actual vase had once fallen to the floor and cracked, making a beautiful shape. After depicting it many times in other compositions, it fell a final time, finally bursting into shards.
